BUDAPEST 1992

The image is more than an idea. It is a vortex or cluster of fused ideas and is endowed with energy. Ezra Pound

To photograph is to hold one’s breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It’s at that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy. Henri Cartier-Bresson

A ‘prequel’, if you like, to my film Shadows of Budapest. In 1992, I was in Budapest to shoot an episode of Maigret. The state film industry had collapsed and we were there taking advantage of the facilities and local skills, and the city stood in for Paris before its stone was cleaned.

  1. Such a lovely city. Did you ever discover where the statue in the courtyard was? Probably restored and belonging to some embassy on Andrassy. Hope to look when the weather warms up a bit.
