TWISTS AND TURNS

A man is a bundle of relations, a knot of roots, whose flower and fruitage is the world. Ralph Waldo Emerson

A retrospective compilation of my production of Knots for the Actors’ Company in 1973, featuring some rare documentary and rehearsal footage and part of the original score:

Timberlake Wertenbaker’s translation of Sophocles’ Antigone premiered last week at Southwark Playhouse. Here is my Tiresias, in rehearsal and in performance:

But today, Sunday, I return to Sadler’s Wells, Coco and Paris in the 50s.

  1. My first experience watching you perform was as Lord Peter. As you left the prison speaking of how much fun you could have spending your days with Harriet, you gracefully vaulted over a post and finished playing hopscotch while telling us how much fun you could have at night. I can see after, viewing KNOTS, that your abilities started long ago. Thank you for posting this, it was wonderful to see yet another of your talents.
Enjoy your time on stage, you look wonderful.

  3. Fascinating interview. "Absolute positions difficult to justify," and "wanting always to speak and never to listen..." witty and tender reflections on Antigone, theater directors and young and old artists.
Thanks for the broadcast, and to KR for letting us know how to access it from far away,

  5. This is what happens when I don't check in regularly...the Knots video is blocked by EMI "on copyright grounds." I can see the sense of copyright, of course I can, but it does seem rather dog-in-the-mangerish sometimes when a large corporation prevents people seeing something from which it is deriving no useful revenue.

The new look is indeed very nice, and I have lots of catching up to do.
