We had a carpenter come to deal with a little dry rot in our roof. He told me that, amongst the historic buildings he
’d worked in, had been Hampton Court. It struck me that his job was like that of an actor, who works his materials in the great theatres of the world and in obscure fringe venues.

I'd have been up there with him, peering over his shoulder and driving him nuts ... If I had my time again, I'd be either a carpenter or an engineer. But when I was making my career decisions, girls didn't have those sort of choices ... Not that I ended up doing what I was supposed to be doing anyway - but then, how many do?
